Recreational opportunities abound along the river for residents and visitors. In addition to the existing 28 public access sites for boating access, there are numerous parks along the river, providing opportunities for fishing, picnicking, camping, wildlife viewing and relaxing. There are places to disembark for riverside trail use, access to services in river towns, and touring points of interest. There are also connections to non-motorized trails from the river in Holly, Fenton, Linden, Corunna, Owosso, and Chesaning offering multi-modal recreation.
The Shiawassee River is open to public use without restriction for group size (e.g., church group, school classes, and clubs), motors, seasonal closings, or trip length. Seasonal factors may affect navigability—either low flow or too much flow, both of which are communicated through this website and the Keepers of the Shiawassee Facebook Page.
